What do I miss most as I have passed through life. Losing Hawaii was like losing home, sacrificing myself for priestly vocations has almost killed me, loss of confidants the same, but mostly it has been loss of illusions, delusions and evasions. They were the water for this fish and I must breath in a […]

Obama, Punahou, and I

Word searching on the new Obama bio, Punahou comes up a lot. So 1. Obama’s school was different. I went to a school regimented like a New England Prep School…in the academy 4 years of history, English, French, 2 of science and math and two years of another foreign language  to make up for not […]

Place of Ruin by Jessica Powers

I love this poem. There must be some place darker to the eye than this gray shack above a cluttered walk. Burdocks are green though all the grass is dry, and still beneath these eaves the swallows talk.   There must be some place without any beauty , favored of God, as with reproof of […]

I was working once with three email carriers and three telephones, a blog (this one) and a website. I lost the thread a couple of times when it would have been better not. I also rely on the search button which doesn’t always work. And of course there is the problem with electrical black outs […]

Scary and Tough

I have two more books that I find very difficult to read. I did manage to finish the book of Job but only in the last 10 years. I had to struggle for a long time with my prayer. It was very quiet, but it was not really contemplative. I was in fact afraid to […]

The Unwanted Newman

Just a note. I run a little website on the Oratory, called the virtual Oratory. There are different sections including one on, of course, Newman. I just checked the stats today and found that out of 8000 plus hits…not one was counted for the section on John Henry Newman. Not even a try!

Terrible words from Amos in today’s reading. But it encourages smugness too. WE have the WORD THEY do NOT. IT is their fault…I thought what if the whole Catholic Church went on retreat for 3 years…only bare essentials getting done. The Vatican does this for a week in Lent. But what process cannot evaded? What […]

Our gifts

Gospel Matthew 9:1-8 They glorified God who had given such authority to men. After entering a boat, Jesus made the crossing, and came into his own town. And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.” […]

Gospel Mk 6:1-6 Jesus departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples. When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds […]

Let us be humble

Higgs field found…A boson…What is that in subatomic physics??? Well, time for a colon so….: “All known elementary and composite particles are bosons or fermions, depending on their spin: particles with half-integer spin are fermions; particles with integer spin are bosons. In the framework of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, this is a purely empirical observation. However, […]
